Nestled in the vibrant heart of San Diego’s North Park neighborhood, White Rice delivers an authentic and soul-satisfying Filipino culinary experience that's as comforting as it is adventurous. This Filipino restaurant brings a thoughtfully curated menu to the table, spotlighting beloved classics and bold flavors that capture the essence of Filipino home cooking with a modern twist.
White Rice is a haven for fans of hearty rice bowls and comforting traditional favorites. Popular dishes center around rich, savory proteins and fresh, vibrant accompaniments. Must-tries like the Lumpiang Gulay offer crisp seasonal vegetables wrapped in a perfectly fried spring roll, served with a spiced vinegar that awakens the palate with tangy zest. Meanwhile, the Ube Pandesal, a Filipino sweet roll served with whipped ube butter, showcases a delightful balance of creamy sweetness and fluffy bread—making it a popular treat any time of day.
The menu boasts a delicious array of offerings including the iconic Sisilog, a savory pork and egg skillet that bursts with garlicky goodness; the crispy yet tender Lechon Kawali, delivering that satisfying crunch with every bite; and the smoky, tender Grilled Chicken that transports diners straight to the streets of Manila with its authentic marinade. For those craving an extra kick or a fusion flair, options like Bulgogi and Adobada bowls bring diverse tastes to the Filipino dining landscape.
To complement these hearty meals, White Rice offers inventive beverages like the uniquely refreshing Calamansi Black Tea, which masterfully balances citrus brightness with the deep, rich essence of black tea—a perfect match to the savory dishes. Fans of creative upgrades can add extras such as ube butter, eggs, or house-made sauces that enhance each dish’s layers of flavor.
The vibe at White Rice is casual yet vibrant, with a modest outdoor patio that invites diners to enjoy their meal al fresco in the pleasant San Diego air. While the space is intimate, the atmosphere feels friendly and welcoming—reflecting the warmth and generosity of Filipino hospitality. It’s an ideal spot for both a quick, satisfying lunch and a laid-back evening gathering with friends and family.
Customer reflections reveal a few honest insights that further bring the experience to life. Many praise the generous portions and bold, juicy flavors of dishes like the pork belly bowl and chicken adobo, highlighting the satisfying chew and perfectly seasoned meat. A few point out areas for refinement—such as the texture of the rice or seasoning levels—indicating the kitchen’s commitment to continuous improvement and an authentic taste experience. The consensus, however, remains overwhelmingly positive about the creative and comforting nature of the food and the fair price point, the latter being especially noteworthy in a city where quality and affordability rarely go hand in hand.
White Rice also extends its appeal beyond just food, offering branded merch including hoodies, tote bags, and T-shirts that let fans wear their love for Filipino flavors proudly. This indicates a growing community around the brand, making it more than just a restaurant but a cultural touchstone for locals craving something special.
In essence, White Rice is more than a meal—it's a heartfelt homage to Filipino cuisine that invites you to explore rich textures and bold tastes within a welcoming, relaxed setting. Whether you’re rediscovering the nostalgia of longanisa or trying the infamous sisig for the first time, White Rice offers a genuine, flavorful journey that will keep you coming back for more.
First time here, ordered to go during the Adams Ave Festival. Waited about 15 minutes for the chopped pork belly bowl, which we had no problem with. The bowl was a good size for the price (hard to come by these days). The rice seemed a little undercooked but edible. The pork belly was chewy but in a good way. Overall I liked the bowl and would order it again. Now let’s talk about the overpriced ube pandesal. Two “mini” sized pandesal for $4. Do not expect pandesal the size of your local Filipino bakery’s pandesal. Like do not even compare it to Valerio’s. You will feel robbed. The pandesal at White Rice is the size of my thumb (see my photo). Literally you can ingest it taking two bites. Even two put together do not equal the size of a regular pandesal. However, I will give them props on the ube butter. That is some good stuff!
You dont have to go to National City when you're jonesing for that longanisa, babe! Just drive on up to North Park and see the manongs at White Rice. Ube everything all day, whether its the milk tea or pandesal. You cant go wrong with Chicken Adobo. If you're truly adventurous: Longanisa is a must. Great atmosphere, service and PRICE!
Alright, alright. I tried their Pork Sisig over Garlic rice. It was like eating cube fried firm tofu. Good portion, just need some flavoring. Slap some mayo and add calamansi juice and vinegar up in that bowl! The garlic rice, y'all buy some calrose rice, what is this long grain cheap rice? Ay Nako! And use fresh garlic rather than powder. I wouldn't even mind paying $2 more if ya'll make this dish fire in the future. Once you perfected this, have an uncle try it if it's pulutan approved
Very yummy. My rice was a bit hard so at first I thought that’s just how they cook their rice, but my husbands order , his rice was perfect . The food is very flavorful and the meat is very juicy and delicious. Would go back. My husband absolutely loved the pork belly he got. I’m a simple gal so protein, rice and pickled salad is right up my alley. They have a little outdoor patio for seating ( I was in the car while my husband ordered) so I’m not too sure if you can actually Dine inside. Parking I believe is street parking. Anyways support small businesses and definitely check them out
Indulge in the pure joy of Filipino comfort food, beautifully presented in delightful rice bowls. The sisig dishes I ordered were a burst of flavors, combining acidity, savoriness, a hint of pepper, and the zesty essence of calamansi citron—all in a single, unforgettable bite. To accompany the meal, I tried their calamansi black tea, which perfectly complemented the dishes. While it's a small venue with limited seating, this charming little shack is the perfect spot to enjoy a quick and scrumptious meal with a friend. A true gem for anyone craving a taste of authentic Filipino comfort cuisine.
